General Information

Starlink is a developing technology funded by SpaceX which promises to provide High-Speed Internet world-wide in every dead spot and rural area through the use of their advanced satellite internet. This will be possible by launching approximately 12,000 satellites into space which will be spread around earth and then expanding dependant on the first response.

The project will start providing internet first in Northern US and Canada first in Mid of 2020 and they have promised to provide worldwide coverage by 2021. SpaceX has already sent 420 satellites into earth’s orbit which will position themselves to focus on providing high speed internet for the Northern US and Canada as this is their first stage.

In a beta test of the project the US Army reported that the service was providing speeds of up to 610mbps, and according to Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX) these speeds will continue to get faster. To put this number in perspective, the average download speeds in Australia range around 43mbps as of March 2020 which is approximately 14 times less than the beta test of Starlink. It is estimated that the service will cost about $120 AUD per month, and even though this may seem expensive, Telstra provide their fastest internet (80mpbs average) with unlimited data for $110 AUD.
